New 55-unit “state of the art” almshouse
Client: Trustees of St John’s Hospital

The client’s brief was to employ best practice to design a site that would contribute to the future heritage the 800-year-old charity.

Working in close association with the project architects from the early stages, New Leaf Studio was responsible for both the hard and soft landscape. The project called for imaginative and creative use of space and close attention in selection of materials and detailing to ensure harmony between buildings and landscape.

The design includes a series of garden, courtyard and roof garden spaces, each with a different character and function. Various bespoke elements include curved benches, timber roof planters, traditional boundary railings and gates with stone piers, water features and bronze artwork plaques set into paving.

The site was awarded the Almshouse Association “Patron’s Award”, Presented by the Patron, HRH Prince Charles, Prince of Wales.
